On Saturday, August 15, 2026, I slipped into my black dress and white overcoat, gathered what was left of my energy (because my body had chosen violence that day), and made my way to the African Leadership Group’s Gala, Awards & Fundraiser Night at the Denver Botanic Gardens. If you’ve ever attended an ALG gala, you already know they don’t do “small.” They host events with full commitment, full color, and a guest list that looks like the United Nations decided to take a field trip.
Even feeling slightly under the weather, I refused to miss it. My friend, Ola Kukoyi, arrived before me, but I kept her on the phone while still in the parking lot- because if I wandered off to the wrong table, I would never hear the end of it. Shout‑out to her, truly. Without her gentle nudge, I might have used my ‘not feeling well’ excuse to stay home and cuddle my blanket.
Denver Botanic Gardens in Full Majesty
The Gardens were doing the absolute most — glowing lanterns, lush greenery, and that soft evening breeze. Guests arrived dressed to impress. Men floated in wearing stylish kaftans, tuxedos, and full agbada regalia. Women glided in with African couture, elegant dress suits, gleaming sequins dresses and structured beautiful gowns.
The African community showed up strong, but our Black American cousins and friends from the wider Colorado community? They stormed the event in impressive numbers. It was one of those nights where you greet people with, “You look good!” before you reassure them that yes, you still remember their names.
Awards, Applause & the Spirit of Community
And there came the ALG’s awards session! As in previous years, honorees included leaders in education, entrepreneurship, civic engagement, cultural preservation, and youth empowerment. The acceptance speeches were a blend of heartfelt gratitude and inspirational storytelling. I clapped and nodded like a proud auntie, soaking in every moment.
Paddles Up Fundraising
The MC worked the room like a seasoned referee, and before long, paddles were flying up with the enthusiasm of people bidding for front‑row Beyoncé tickets. Programs supporting youth leadership, immigrant entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and community education received generous backing. The energy was electric, the kind of collective generosity that reminds you why ALG remains one of Colorado’s most influential African‑led organizations.
Music, Magic & the Slow Beautiful Drift of the Night
The emcees kept the room alive with humor and charm, and every segment flowed into the next like a well‑rehearsed symphony. Despite feeling a bit ill, I found myself laughing, swaying, and soaking in the warmth of community. There’s something about being surrounded by familiar faces, shared culture, and collective purpose that makes even an off‑day feel golden. The night wore on slowly, beautifully, and with that signature grace that reminds us that when a community gather with intention, magic happens.
A Moment for Papa Dia
The event ended with a deeply emotional moment: Papa Dia’s family took the stage to honor him with an award. They spoke about his tireless work over ALG’s 20‑year journey, building something monumental, impactful, and rooted in love, while still being a present, devoted father at home. It was especially touching because Papa had only just returned from Senegal the day before, after rushing home upon hearing of his beloved mother’s passing. The room held its breath with him- grief, pride, and gratitude woven together.
Walking Out Full
After jostling with the crowd to take photographs in front of the ALG banner, my friend and I walked out of the Gardens feeling full… of joy, of belonging, of community. ALG continues to build bridges, celebrate excellence, and create spaces where our stories shine. The gala lifted my spirit. And that, my friends, is the power of community.
