By Afrik Digest won five awards Saturday during the Colorado Press Association’s 148th annual convention.
Vera Azuka Idam, Afrik Digest’s publisher and editor, took home four first placed certificates and one third placed. She won the top prizes in the Best Health Enterprise/Health Feature Story, Best Opinion Writing, Best Social Justice or Equity Reporting and Best Feature Story categories while clinching third place in the Best Arts & Entertainment Column Writing category.
Her story on female genital mutilation titled “Now i Understand Why- Inside the Hidden Trauma of Female Genital Mutilation” won the first place award in the Best Health Enterprise/Health Feature Story, Best Social Justice or Equity Reporting and Best Feature Story categories. Her feature piece titled “America, Prepare for the SAVE America Act – The Clock is Ticking” won the top award for the Best Opinion Writing category while her “BREAKING BARRIERS, BUILDING BRIDGES: My Saturday at ALG’s Black History Month Convening story won the third place award for the Best Arts & Entertainment Column Writing category.
The Colorado Press Association hosted its 148th annual convention, themed “Local News Solutions 2026,” from August 27–29, 2026, at the Delta Hotels in Denver/Thornton. It featured collaborative networking sessions, a Young Professionals Reception and various industry updates.
More than a dozen other media outlets in the region also won CPA awards Saturday night, highlighted by Boulder Reporting Lab’s 22 certificates, including general excellence for best newsroom. A complete list of winners will be posted on the event’s website.
